The following information describes in which ways Mediator can help to satisfy the curriculum in key stages 2, 3 and 4. This information was obtained from the National Curriculum website.

Key Stage 2:

  • How to prepare information for development using ICT, including selecting suitable sources, finding information, classifying it and checking it for accuracy
  • How to develop and refine ideas by bringing together, organizing and reorganizing text, tables, images and sound as appropriate [for example, desktop publishing, multimedia presentations].
  • How to share and exchange information in a variety of forms, including e-mail [for example, displays, posters, animations, musical compositions]
  • To be sensitive to the needs of the audience and think carefully about the content and quality when communicating information [for example, work for presentation to other pupils, writing for parents, publishing on the internet].
  • Working with others to explore a variety of information sources and ICT tools [for example, searching the internet for information about a different part of the world, designing textile patterns using graphics software, using ICT tools to capture and change sounds].

Key Stage 3:

  • How to interpret information and to reorganize and present it in a variety of forms that are fit for purpose.
  • To use a range of ICT tools efficiently to draft, bring together and refine information and create good-quality presentations in a form that is sensitive to the needs of particular audiences and suits the information content.
  • Working with a range of information to consider its characteristics, structure, organization and purposes [for example, using database, spreadsheet and presentation software to manage membership and finances of a club and present the annual report].
  • Designing information systems and evaluating and suggesting improvements to existing systems [for example, evaluating a web site or researching, designing and producing a multimedia presentation for a science topic].

Key Stage 4:

  • Use ICT to enhance their learning and the quality of their work
  • Use ICT effectively to explore, develop and interpret information and solve problems in a variety of subjects and contexts
  • Apply, as appropriate, the concepts and techniques of using ICT to measure, record, respond to, control and automate events
  • Apply, as appropriate, the concepts and techniques of ICT-based modelling, considering their advantages and limitations against other methods.
  • Exchange and present information in a variety of subjects and contexts.
  • Consider how the information found and developed using ICT should be interpreted and presented in forms that are sensitive to the needs of particular audiences, fit for purpose and suit the information content.
  • Designing information systems and evaluating and suggesting improvements to existing systems, with use by others in mind [for example, designing an integrated system for running a school production or a small company].
  • Tackling demanding problems in a wide variety of contexts, including work in other subjects.
  • Using a range of information sources and ICT tools to improve efficiency and extend capability.
