  • Purpose of Perception
    • We've seen evidence for both top-down and bottom-up influences on perception
      • Anyway there can be a compromise?
        • Some theorists suggest both processes work in parallel
    • Evidence of two perceptual systems
      • Dorsal Stream
        • This drives visually guided behaviour such as spatial skills.
      • Ventral Stream
        • Primarly concerned with recognition, better at processing detail.
    • Purpose of Vision - Norman (2002)
      • This suggests that perception for recognition and action map onto these streams
        • Perception for Action system: Associated with the dorsal pathway, it relates to Gibson's theory of direct perception and is for moving around and interacting in the environment
        • Perception for recognition system: Associated with the ventral pathway and Gregory;s idea of indirect perception and is for recognizing objects.
    • Evidence from NeuroPsych
      • Double Dissociation following brain damage (Perenin & Vighetto, 1988)
        • They looked into Optic ataxia patients who had damage to the dorsal pathway.
        • They had impaired ability on visually guided movements although their vision/object ability was intact.
      • James, Culham, Humphrey, Milner & Goodale (2003)
        • They looked into visual agonsia patients who had damage to the ventral pathway
        • The patients had impaired object recognition although unimpaired visual guided movements
    • Evidence from Perceptual Illusions
      • Muller - Lyer task by Haart, Carey & Milne (1999). They used a 3D version of the Muller Lyer with two conditons
          • A matching task: P's indicated the length of the line in one figure by the size of the gap between their finger and thumb (Used for the recognition system)
        • A grasping task: Participants rapidly grasped the target figure using their index finger and thumb (Designed for the perception for action system)
        • They found a strong illusion effect when visual matching was used but no illusion effect when grasping was used.
